A Queensland fruit fly outbreak has been detected at Glenrowan.

A 15 km suspension zone centred on the detection site will be declared to regulate the movement of locally produced host fruit to Melbourne and other sensitive markets including South Australia and Western Australia.

Host fruit for these markets must be treated prior to movement from the suspension zone.

DPI Plant Standards senior officer Bill Ashcroft said the outbreak was within the Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone.

"Because of this, it is critical to prevent the pest from spreading and impacting on horticultural production in the region," Mr Ashcroft said.

An eradication program will start shortly within a 1.5 km radius from the outbreak, and a leaflet describing the program will be delivered to affected households.

DPI teams will visit all properties within the outbreak zone to apply bait into the canopy of suitable trees to attract and kill fruit flies. The teams will need to visit properties twice a week for up to 12 weeks.
