VFF unhappy with water group

Country News

The VFF will seek the intervention of Victorian Water Minister Tim Holding after Goulburn-Murray Water announced the appointment of an interim customer reference group for the Pyramid-Boort district.

The water services committee for the area was suspended in December after the authority claimed it was dysfunctional and ineffective.

A meeting requested by the VFF, and attended by G-MW representatives and the services committee executive, on January 25 failed to reach agreement about an alternative.

The VFF proposed an interim committee of former water services committee representatives and G-MW nominees, but it was rejected by the suspended committee.

The VFF wants the election for a new water services committee speeded up and will seek the involvement of Mr Holding.

G-MW announced on Friday the membership of the interim group, to be chaired by farmer Neil Beattie, who acted as an independent person on the selection panel for the new group.

The VFF insists this is not appropriate.

G-MW managing director David Stewart said the board had already appointed Mr Beattie as chairman of the group and the people who applied for positions knew this.

A public meeting in December called for the reinstatement of the committee and the VFF has described the process as "ill-conceived and heavy handed".

VFF president Andrew Broad called for a more democratic approach.

Mr Stewart said there was some confusion over the process of water services committee elections.

He said the process had always required board approval after the customers elected representatives.

Mr Stewart said the new reference group comprised a "terrific" mix of skills, views and experience to represent the interests of local irrigators and provide advice to the board.

"Every member of the committee is directly involved in running a successful irrigated agriculture business in the region, and every member has expressed a real passion for the future of their irrigation area," he said.

The members are chairman Neil Beattie from Boort, Sue Bennett from Yarrawalla, Andrew Vander Drift from Macorna, Paul Gill from Appin, John McEwen from Pyramid Hill and Barry Lyons from Dingee.

The new group will make recommendations on the return and timing of a water services committee.
