Girgarre dairy farmers Jayke and Bec Fisher say Murray Goulburn will be pressured into opening with a strong price.

Young farmers Jayke and Bec Fisher from Girgarre are two years into a three-year contract with Murray Goulburn.

‘‘I think MG will have to open up with a strong price, because they can’t afford not to, they have lost so many suppliers already,’’ Mr Fisher said.

‘‘We went to the suppliers’ meeting in Rochester and the new management sounded all right and if they have to cut costs to deliver a better milk price, well they have to do what they have to do.

‘‘With the Rochester factory (closing) I am sure our milk will just go somewhere else to be processed.’’

At 27, Mr Fisher is the future of the industry but he said it had been a hard slog to get this far.

‘‘It has been a very stressful year for us and it does take its toll on you,’’ he said.

‘‘Even though inputs have been cheaper this year, we have still found it very hard to pay our bills which has been largely due to the very low milk price.

‘‘We are just starting out and we haven’t had any good years to help build up our equity and if things don’t turn around in the new financial year we will have to see what options we have.’’
