  • They just keep going and going

Katamatite East farm worker Richard Curtis with his two dogs Nellie and Jed.

  • They just keep going and going

Jed, who did not cost Mr Curtis a thing, turned out to be an expensive dog after he broke his leg.

When Mr Curtis first got Nellie he recalled how she could fit in his pocket.

How did they get their names?

Richard: I named Nellie after my auntie.

Kerri (Richard’s wife): I named Jed after Jed Clampett from the TV show The Beverly Hillbillies.

What are their working abilities like?

Richard: Jed is showing some signs of being a good one. We don’t always use them in the dairy — only for emergencies like when the cows get on the wrong side of the channel and you don’t want to swim across, so you send the dogs across.

What is the best thing about having them help out?

The best thing is when in big paddocks in fog, I can’t see but they will start bringing the cows in. (Also) if it’s too wet I can stay in the laneway and send them out.

They seem to be energetic dogs

They are both over the top. I give them a run, which settles them down, and then they are ready to go again. If they don’t have a run they will rip everything up. It’s always a race when they are together. On their own they’re okay.

What do they do when they are not working?

They love going swimming. In summer if we can’t find them they are usually in a trough and you can see their heads poking up.

I hear Jed had a bad injury when he was younger.

Jed broke his leg at about three months old. He jumped off the back of the quad bike and got his foot stuck in between the step and the rollbar. It broke it clean like a twig.

Kerri: He has a plate in it.

Richard: We got him for free but then he cost us $2000. So now he’s an expensive dog.
