DeLaval showcased its new rotary milking system at the Elmore Field Days.

DeLaval showcased its new rotary milking system at the Elmore Field Days following three years of research and development to bring it to market.

The DeLaval Rotary E100 is the result of a multi-million-dollar development program to create the ultimate rotary for farming conditions in Australia and New Zealand.

The company said the new system would set a benchmark for rotaries as it rolled out in global markets over the next two years.

‘‘We’re thrilled that the Australian and New Zealand markets are the first in the world to have access to the DeLaval Rotary E100,’’ DeLaval’s Oceania sales director Justin Thompson said.

‘‘The grassland systems that are popular in Oceania present particular challenges to efficient and profitable milking, and we’ve put a huge amount of engineering effort into ensuring this meets the unique demands of pasture-based dairy farming.’’

He said the technology built into the machine was designed around on-farm priorities for farmers looking to measurably improve animal welfare, farm profitability, worker efficiency and milk quality.

‘‘We’ve had the system in use on two test farms in New Zealand over the 2016-17 season and the cow comfort improvements have been remarkable.’’

Mr Thompson said there had been good early interest in the system from Australian farmers ahead of the Elmore launch.

‘‘The cows love it and cow flow is amazing in it,’’ the test farm’s sharemilker Chap Zweirs said.

‘‘There’s a lot of technology in it — the automatic drafting, milk meters to see production, heat detection and so forth — and it’s actually exceeded my expectations.’’

Farm owner Jack Scheres said the cows adapted to it well.

‘‘Within a week, we were milking with just one person. That’s a big bonus for being efficient with labour on the farm, and keeping milking as reliable as possible,’’ Mr Scheres said.

The DeLaval Rotary E100 is the first phase in a global rotary development program planned by DeLaval in the next two years.
