One of the highlights is the Wanganui Homestead and Coach House, in Shepparton, which was the home of mining entrepreneur and politician William Orr.

The Greater Shepparton Heritage Open Day will be held this weekend, with more than 40 places of heritage and historical significance available to visit for free.

Organised by the Greater Shepparton Heritage Advisory Committee in conjunction with Greater Shepparton City Council, the day was inspired by ‘Open House Melbourne’ with some places opening up for the first time and many that are rarely on show to the public.

One of the highlights is the Wanganui Homestead and Coach House, in Shepparton, which was the home of mining entrepreneur and politician William Orr.

Other standouts are SPC’s old cool rooms in Shepparton, Gowangardie Homestead in Dookie and Tallygaroopna’s Fairley Downs.

Some of the other locations are museums and collections that normally have a fee attached.

Some venues are opening their doors to anyone, while others include bus and walking tours and need to be booked.

■The Heritage Open Day will be held on Saturday, October 28 from 10am to 4pm. For bookings or more information, phone 58329730 or go to: http://greatershepparton.com.au/whats-happening/events
