What are their personalities like?

Jane: Pixie’s a bit more timid.

Mick: She likes to be the boss.

Jane: Jed is still growing into his body. He’s like a clumsy teenager.

Jane: Evie’s just a pest.

How do Pixie and Jed go working the sheep?

Mick: Pixie’s a good paddock dog and she’s good at casting. She’s not as forceful in the yards. Jed is great in the yards, he has a good bark.

Jane: He’s learnt to back and he’s keen to show off that ability and he’s keen to please.

Where do they sleep?

Jane: Pixie sleeps in a beanbag at the house and Jed and Evie sleep in individual kennels and each night are locked up.

Do they have any funny habits?

Jane: Jed has a habit of, when he’s in the run at night, he will howl at the kookaburras at dusk. He likes to chase lizards too. He can be fixated on them for as long as it takes. Jed also likes to sit on top of the hay bale when feeding sheep. Pixie makes noises like a pig. The kids call her ‘‘little piggy’’ sometimes.

How do they get on with other animals?

Jane: Jed and Evie like to wrestle. They are all good with chooks but they do like to steal the eggs. They are generally pretty good with other dogs after the initial meeting.

Do you spend a lot of time with them?

Jane: Pixie and Jed go with Mick when checking sheep in the yards and they’re at your feet when you’re outside.

What would you do without them?

Mike: We’d be lost without them. A dog is better than another man. They are good company.
