Scholarship winners . . . Sampson Trust awardees Stephen Martin from Shepparton, Colin Squires from Bonnie Doon and Brenda Lee from Shepparton with trust representatives Bruce Cumming and Garry Smith.

Three young people who are keen to advance themselves have been awarded scholarships by the Sampson Leadership Trust.

The trust was established to perpetuate the memory of natural resource leader Ken Sampson, who died in 2009.

Brenda Lee, from Shepparton, is a drinking water compliance officer with Goulburn Valley Water and a volunteer school tutor. Her scholarship will enable her to learn more about the causes of blackwater events in the Seven Creeks catchment.

Colin Squares, a senior storage officer with Goulburn-Murray Water, is involved with a Landcare group and running a field trial comparing organic and traditional fertilisers. His scholarship will enable him to complete his agricultural studies.

Stephen Martin is a design engineer from Shepparton who designs fruit packing systems for horticulture. He is a volunteer at a toy library and involved with sport, and his scholarship will enable him to travel overseas to learn more about integrated packing systems.

The presentations were announced at last week’s Fairley Leadership Program graduation evening.

Guest speakers were runners Narelle Pell and Kathy Fuller who participated in the 777 Adventure Challenge to raise money for Bravehearts, which supports victims of sexual abuse. The runners completed seven marathons in seven cities in seven days.
