Campaspe fighting for EC funding

Country News

An Exceptional Circumstances (EC) application for Murray System irrigators is being lodged by the Shire of Campaspe in conjunction with the Ganawarra and Swan Hill shires.

Campaspe Shire Drought Recovery Committee leader Cr Neil Repacholi said they had decided to follow on from the example set by Moira Shire.

He said council had already lodged an unsuccessful application for Exceptional Circumstances but it had been very general.

Cr Repacholi said the new application would be very specific and there was an excellent chance the 200 to 300 Murray System irrigators in Campaspe Shire would soon be eligible for EC grants.

He said council was very aware of the troubles facing farmers at the moment.

"We believe Murray System irrigators are in dire straits," Cr Repacholi said.

The application will be lodged within a month.

Cr Repacholi said it was important farmers knew where they stood by late August to early September.

"A lot of decisions are made at that time about whether they'll stay in dairy farming.

"If you can access interest rate subsidies, that makes extending your loans over a long period of time and not interfering with your cash flow a better option."
