Fresh fox bait returns

Country News

Victorian farmers will have easier access to a range of fresh baits for pest animals from next year.

From January 1, bait users in Victoria will be able to buy 1080 pest animal bait products from accredited retailers and authorised bait manufacturers.

Fresh baits including carrots and livers laced with 1080 poison will also be available for purchase, four years after they were banned for occupational health and safety reasons.

Karramomous farmer Stephen Merrylees welcomed the re-introduction of fresh baits.

"I think it is excellent. Common sense has prevailed," Mr Merrylees said.

"Liver bait is by far the most successful method.

"The strike rate of ensuring foxes take (shelfstable baits like Fox-Off) is lower."

Agriculture Minister Joe Helper, who made the announcement last month, said the changes would make it easier and more convenient for bait users to access 1080 bait products.

Currently 1080 bait products are only available from authorised DPI staff at 58 locations across Victoria for one hour a week.

State Member for Benalla Bill Sykes, said the policy change would lead to improved service for bait users.

"Private enterprises will result in better service delivery," Dr Sykes said.

"Currently it is damn difficult to access the bait if you cannot fit in with the limited availability (of access times)."

Dr Sykes said the baiting strategy needed to be used in conjunction with other methods to be successful.

"Baiting is a very effective method, but needs to be used in conjunction with a fox bounty, the use of alpacas on a property and other strategies," he said.

"When these strategies are used in combination that will result in effective fox control."

People wishing to use 1080 baits will be required to complete a 1080 training course and hold the appropriate licence or permit.

Baits will only be available through DPI until the changes come into effect next year.

For further information, go to www.dpi.vic.gov.au/1080 or phone the 1080 bait hotline on 1300 101 080.
