Forums to address park plans

Country News

Last month's draft report from the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council proposed the creation of new and additional areas of national parks and regional parks in northern Victoria.

A major new national park stretching from the Murray River along the Goulburn River south of Shepparton to Toolamba was proposed as well as a regional park at Shepparton incorporating part of the Lower Goulburn State Forest, Shepparton Flora and Fauna Reserve and Mooroopna Recreation Reserve.

Victorian farmers are encouraged to voice their concern over the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council's draft recommendations, at a series of community forums across the state this month.

VFF president Simon Ramsay said the recommendation to remove grazing on Crown land was of concern and the group would be making a submission to VEAC.

"The State Government do not have the resources or the ability to manage these Crown land areas, therefore these recommendations will lead to a serious increase in the threat of pests, weeds and bushfires," Mr Ramsay said.

The following VEAC community forums will take place throughout August:

Cohuna: Gannawarra Shire Council Building (Old Council Chamber room), Tuesday, August 7, 3 pm to 7 pm.

Echuca: Comfort Resort Echuca Moama, 54-56 Meninya St, Moama, Wednesday, August 8, 3 pm to 7 pm.

Nathalia: Nathalia Community Centre, Robertson St, Monday, August 13, 3 pm to 7 pm.

Mildura: Quality Motel Mildura, Seventh St, Mildura, Tuesday, August 14, 3 pm to 7 pm.

Wangaratta: Murdoch House, 84 Murdoch Rd, Thursday, August 16, 3 pm to 7 pm.

(A Shepparton forum was held on Monday.)

You are welcome to arrive and leave at any stage during the forum times.

Anyone wanting to meet with VEAC councillors, phone 9637 9902 or 1800 134 803 and give your time and location preferences for attending the forums.
