The Goulburn Valley has been swamped with hundreds of backpackers and seasonal workers looking for harvest labour work.
The influx of prospective workers has coincided with a later-than-normal start for the region's pear harvest.
Goulburn Valley harvest labour coordinator Mike Kiss said there was a significant demand for work at the moment.
"We have been inundated with backpackers looking for work," Mr Kiss said.
"It is a late-starting season, and backpackers have been getting frustrated - but we recognise they have been very patient and understanding.
"Our message to growers is that there is plenty of labour if they want to tap into it."
Mr Kiss said there were concerns a "slight language barrier" may be aiding unscrupulous contractors recruit backpackers for their own means.
"Contractors are prevalent at the moment, they're everywhere," he said.
"Not all of them are doing the wrong thing, but some are using the backpackers to do a day's work and not pay them the correct award wage.
"We would certainly advise backpackers to come through our office and we'll put them on to growers who will pay their workers what they deserve for their efforts."
Visiting German backpacker Alena said the money certainly wasn't as good here as in Queensland.
"In Stanthorpe, we were paid per tree and earned about $200 for eight hours," she said.
"Here it's per bin and we earn about $75 a day."
