Fox baiting soon

Country News

The Broken Boosey Conservation Management Network is coordinating a fox control program in the Thoona, Devenish, St James, Picola, Wunghnu, Nathalia, Barmah and Numurkah areas.

The program kicks off on Wednesday, March 3 and will run to Tuesday, April 30.

The program is now in its fifth year and continues to significantly decrease fox numbers in the designated areas.

Landholders who are concerned about the impact of foxes on wildlife will take part in this year's fox baiting program.

Parks Victoria will also help to reduce fox numbers in the area by baiting public land in the Broken Boosey State Park and natural features reserves.

Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority's acting river health projects co-ordinator Jim Castles said fox control was important for every facet of the community.

"The aim of the fox control program is to decrease the fox population in these areas to improve survival rates of threatened species such as the bush stonecurlew, carpet python and the brolga," he said.

"The BBCMN has provided funding in the past through the DSE, GBCMA and the drought employment program for landholders to complete courses to allow them to purchase and handle 1080 baits.

"Although no funding is available for training this year, 1080 baits will be supplied to accredited landholders who participate in the fox control program."

If you have the necessary permits and wish to participate, phone Jim Castles on 5820 1141 or 0427 053 700.
