Dairy farmers, processors and representative organisations are encouraged to take part in important regional consultations to help shape Australia’s first mandatory dairy code.
Shepparton will host the Murray region’s consultation session on November 27.
‘‘The dairy industry came to me and said they wanted a mandatory code of conduct, so let’s get on with it,’’ Federal Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said.
‘‘Consultations are the first step in the process, and staff from the Department of Agriculture will be on the ground in dairy regions from November 8.
‘‘This process is the first part of making dairy sustainable in Australia.
‘‘A mandatory code between farmers and processors can help make contracts fairer, more transparent and enforce a dispute resolution process.
‘‘It’s not a silver bullet but it’s a good first step.
‘‘There will be more structural reform to come.’’
The Shepparton session will be held on Tuesday, November 27 from 10.30am at the Shepparton Swans Football Club.
