Cash cow for hospital

By Country News

Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital will benefit from the sale of a Holstein steer at Shepparton Regional Saleyards last week.

The Devenish and Dookie districts’ RCH appeal committee offered the 600kg steer, which was snapped up by the Warrnambool-based Midfield Group for a premium price of $1882.

‘‘We’re very happy with that,’’ committee representative Peter Shields said after the auction last Tuesday morning.

The steer was raised by Neil Lonie from St James, who is a staunch supporter of the hospital and an active member of the fundraising committee.

The Goulburn Valley Stock Agents Association supported the sale by auctioning the beast without charge.

The committee is organising a fundraising gala event for March 16 next year, with family entertainment, food stalls, a pig on a spit and fireworks.

Alan Shields and Buzz Schultz are running the annual lamb and sheep drive on October 12.

■The next meeting of the fundraising group will be held on Sunday, September 30 at 3pm at Dookie Recreation Reserve.
