Dry conditions were the reason for a lack of buyers at Tatura stud Yentrac’s seventh annual ram sale.
About 15 registered buyers purchased 43 of the 114 rams up for sale, with a top price of $2850 recorded at the August 26 event. The sale was a mix of White Suffolks, Poll Dorsets and Southdowns.
The 43 that sold averaged $1085 and stud owner Rob McCartney confirmed the dry conditions were a concern going in.
‘‘We were hopeful but it (the weather) was a concern going in with the way the weather is and the climatic conditions,’’ he said.
‘‘The sale started off really well but we just ran out of buyers.
‘‘More people are selling ewes than buying ewes at the moment.’’
After recently being awarded the Broughton trophy for the Performance Ram at the Australasian Dorset Championships, Mr McCartney said it was back to day-to-day farming life for the rest of the year.
‘‘Our showing is over for the year. We are now into fodder conservation, cutting hay and normal farm duties.’’
