Low throughput shuts Kerang saleyards

By Country News

A reduction in stock for sale during the past decade has seen the Kerang Saleyards shut down temporarily.

In 2008, cattle sales at Kerang Saleyards totalled 22651, with this number falling over the years to a low of 3232 in 2018.

Gannawarra Shire Mayor Brian Gibson said the closure would remain until a decision on the future of the yards was made.

‘‘Over the past 10 years, throughput at saleyards have significantly decreased across the whole of Victoria as farmers are choosing alternative methods of selling their livestock,’’ Cr Gibson said.

‘‘At the agents’ request, the lessee has temporarily closed the Kerang Saleyards to provide an opportunity for the agents to develop a plan to assist with making Kerang a viable centre to sell livestock.

‘‘The decision to lock down the yards is to ensure every effort is made to keep the yards safe for both people and livestock.

‘‘Council supports the Kerang Saleyards and will continue to assist the lessee and agents in their endeavour to attract livestock to the centre.’’
