A Ruffy breeder sold the top-priced pen at the 2018 Benalla Sheep Sale on November 16.
In what turned out to be a strong sale, despite a tough season, Ruffy’s Tarcombe Herefords’ pen of 18-month-old ewes topped the sale at $335/head.
Other better lines of 18-month-olds ranged between $275 and $305/head, prices that were in line with other sales held in Bendigo and Corowa.
The Ruffy stud also received the award for Best Presented Pen of First Cross Young Ewes as it sold a total of 474 head at an average price of $289.46.
The total overall yarding was decreased from previous years as a complete clearance of 7000 sheep were sold to buyers coming from Gippsland, the Western Districts, Mansfield, Yea, Alexandra and towns much closer to Benalla.
Competition was subdued on lighter and secondary runs, which were $20 and $30 below agents’ expectations.
Ewe lambs topped at $250, while most lambs ranged from $150 to $200 in what breeders considered a pleasing result.
AL & AM Mort, of Benalla, were also volume sellers with 319 head, topping at $305 and averaging $291.91.
