ABATTOIR CLOSES:

Echuca’s Riverside Meats announced an immediate closure on March 5. The closure will see about 40 people lose their jobs.

WATER MINISTER VISITS NORTHERN VICTORIA:

Federal Agriculture and Water Resources Minister David Littleproud visited the Goulburn Valley on Thursday for the first time since taking office.

Mr Littleproud spoke with irrigators and attended a water forum where he was continually questioned about the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.

POSSIBLE BUYER FOR MG’S KOROIT PLANT:

ACM has confirmed it would be interested in purchasing the Koroit Murray Goulburn plant if it is put up for sale. The future of the plant made news when the ACCC made public its concerns in regards to competition for milk in the state’s west.

LABOUR HIRE CONCERNS:

A contracting labour hire bill, which has passed the Victorian Legislative Assembly, has caused panic throughout the horticulture industry. Grower groups and the VFF say the bill, if it becomes law, will make finding labour hire even more difficult than it is now.

ABARES LOOKS AHEAD:

The country’s commodity forecaster has predicted a fall in farming production for 2017-18 after a record 2016-17 season for cropping. However, this drop is expected to be the lowest figure in the next five years, with gradual increases likely until 2022-23.
