Cash for freight line fix

By Country News

The Tocumwal freight line is set to benefit from a $9million cash injection, with works to replace 30000 timber sleepers and remove mud holes expected to begin this month.

Crews will also undertake maintenance works on five level crossings, with the total package of works to be completed in mid-May.

‘‘Crews will replace around 900 sleepers a day over the next month,’’ Victorian Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allen said.

‘‘While this program is under way, V/Line is taking the opportunity to complete other improvements to the track and crossings along the line.’’

State Member for Northern Victoria Mark Gepp welcomed the works and said the line was an important part of the overall freight network.

Numurkah is on the broad gauge freight line between Tocumwal and Shepparton and is a crucial transport link for farmers and freight operators.

The project is in addition to the $10million in funding for the Shepparton Freight Network Planning project.
