Slammin’ Sam turns his sights on dairy

By Country News

Former AFL footballer and Lambassador Sam Kekovich has turned his campaign expertise to the dairy industry and will come to Shepparton on July 24.

The campaign, 24-7 Day, is being hosted by Farmer Power, which is running community rallies across Victoria between July 22 and 25.

Speaking on Channel 7’s morning show Sunrise on Thursday, Mr Kekovich explained the purpose of the rallies.

‘‘What we are doing in essence is creating an awareness of the precarious predicament our dairy farmers find themselves in,’’ he said.

‘‘I don’t think anyone’s (outside of the industry) aware of how dire and stark this situation is.’’

Joining Mr Kekovich on the trip is Koroit-born folk singer Kayla Dwyer and dairy farmer and mental health awareness advocate Mary Guy, who was awarded Country Community Woman of the Year in Football as part of the AFL’s Country Festival match between Geelong and Essendon earlier this year.

■The Shepparton rally will be held on Tuesday, July 24, at APCO Shepparton, 111-125 Numurkah Rd, Shepparton, between 1.30pm and 3.30pm.
