Goulburn Valley’s big steer

By Country News

First there was Knickers, now meet Big Tom, the Goulburn Valley’s own gigantic steer.

Eclipsing his owner John Kerr at more than six feet (1.8m), Big Tom is a ‘‘gentle giant’’ according to the Kialla Central farmer.

Although the 14-year-old steer is large by any standards, Mr Kerr said he’d previously had a steer that was even bigger, aptly called Big Foot.

After getting Tom as a calf from a neighbour, Mr Kerr said it quickly become clear he wouldn’t be a normal steer.

‘‘I kind of got the sense he’d be big when he just kept growing, just wouldn’t stop,’’ he said.

‘‘We’ve had people call him an elephant. He’s a bit of a sign post, people will say ‘turn right or left at the big Holstein’.’’
