Greens Lake at Corop will once again be closed for New Year’s Eve.
Goulburn-Murray Water customer operations acting general manager Peter Clydesdale said this would be the fifth year Greens Lake was closed on New Year’s Eve at the request of emergency services.
‘‘In the interests of public safety it is our duty to close Greens Lake to avoid any tragedies occurring over the new year holiday period,’’ Mr Clydesdale said.
‘‘The concerns raised with us by local emergency services and community members cannot be ignored.’’
Stanhope police Leading Senior Constable Frank Scopelliti said police and the CFA made the call to close Greens Lake based on public safety concerns.
‘‘The events leading up to the first lake closure in 2014 were such that it was only a matter of time before a life-threatening tragedy would occur,’’ he said.
‘‘The actions of drug and alcohol-affected people can put their own and other’s safety at risk,’’ Sen Const Scopelliti said.
‘‘Emergency services have come to us and have raised serious safety concerns,’’ Mr Clydesdale said.
‘‘We are again closing the lake for a short period over new year on this expert advice and in the interests of the wider community.’’
■The lake will be closed from noon on Saturday, December 29 to noon on Tuesday, January 1.
