DUCK SEASON CHANGE:

Major changes have been announced for this year’s duck hunting season, including a shorter season and reduced bag limit. The nine-week season will run from Saturday, March 16 to Sunday, May 19.

FISH DEATHS:

A mass fish death in the Darling River system at Menindee Lakes has sparked an investigation by NSW DPI and WaterNSW. There have been many reasons provided for the deaths, including drought, water mismanagement and the killing of blue-green algae, resulting in oxygen being sucked out of the water. Federal Agriculture Minister David Littleproud has proposed $5million for a Native Fish Management and Recovery Strategy and will ask his basin state colleagues for the money to come from Murray-Darling Basin funds.

RIVER HEIGHT CONCERNS:

Environmental groups and local recreational fishers have expressed concern over the health of the Goulburn River, arguing high summer flows are causing damage and affecting improvements gained by recent years’ environmental flows.

NEW MINISTER VISITS:

Newly appointed Victorian Agriculture Minister Jaclyn Symes visited the Odgers family dairy farm at Ardmona on Friday to announce funding for dairy industry research. The $35000 will be used by Murray Dairy to boost jobs, training and skills across the dairy sector.

NEW G-MW CHIEF:

Charmaine Quick from Shepparton has been appointed the new managing director of rural water corporation Goulburn-Murray Water. The appointment was announced by the G-MW board on Friday. Ms Quick is expected to take up her new role in February.
