Protesters kicked out of Hyatt

By Alana Christensen

A group of local protesters have been escorted from Canberra’s Hyatt Hotel ahead of this morning’s Ministerial Council (MinCo) meeting of Water Ministers.

Australian Federal Police officers arrived at the hotel lobby shortly after 8am to advise the group they are not permitted to conduct a protest within the hotel grounds.

The group - led by the Speak Up Campaign - travelled to Canberra last night with the intent of conducting a peaceful protest this morning, highlighting the poor treatment of rural communities during the Murray Darling Basin Plan process.

A Speak Up spokesperson said some members of the group were enjoying breakfast when hotel security came up and advised them that no protests are allowed on the premises.

The group were escorted out of the hotel and there are four Australian Federal Police (AFP) members monitoring the protest which is now taking place on a grass area opposite the hotel entrance.

The group includes representatives from the Goulburn Valley, NSW Murray and Murrumbidgee.
