Working Dogs

Shadow makes farm life fun

By Rodney Woods

How did Shadow get his name?

Joshua: My pop gave me this book series called the Ranger’s Apprentice. The characters work for the king and keep him safe from invaders. They come across a dog, named Shadow, who is also a Border Collie.

What is his personality like?

Joshua: He’s a bit cheeky at times. He likes to chew things and he is very energetic with the cattle.

How does Shadow get along with other animals?

Jamie: He loves chasing the cat. He thinks it’s pretty terrific to give her the run around. Our friends had a Border Collie, who was older. He got on with her. They have a kitten which he gets on with. I can’t explain that, as he chases our big cat.

Has he done anything bad?

Jamie: He’s always chewing boots. Even my RM Williams, which I was not happy with.

Jamie: He dug up a dead rooster that we buried.

Joshua: Twice!

What is your favourite thing to do with him, Joshua?

Joshua: My favourite thing to do with him is to play soccer. At one stage he was picking the ball up and putting it where we wanted me to kick it from. He’s a good goalie as well.

I hear Shadow likes a swim.

Joshua: He loves the stock trough. He thinks it’s a dog spa. He will often go for a swim in the lagoon.

What would you do without him?

Joshua: Not much. It would be quite sad. He’s a very friendly dog. He can understand your emotions. I’ve always wanted a dog since Grade 1 because everyone else had one.
