About 620 Gl of water in the River Murray system was lost between June 1, 2018 and January 31, 2019 according to the Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA).
Hot and dry conditions combined with low inflows, high demands and the need for overbank transfers through the Barmah-Millewa Forest were the main factors influencing the conveyance loss according to a recent report.
The MDBA estimates the losses could reach between 850 Gl and 1000 Gl by the end of May.
The report comes following months of water group's around the region lamenting the overbank flows that have been occurring through the Barmah Choke.
