Webinar offers hay market outlook

By Jamie Salter

Australia’s hay market outlook will be discussed in a national webinar co-ordinated by Feed Central, including price estimates and predictions for farmers.

Feed Central managing director Tim Ford will host the webinar, general manager Cieran Maxwell will present an update on trends in the feedlot, and national sales manager Neville Janke will outline prospects for the beef and dairy sectors.

Mr Ford said he would encourage producers to make only as much hay as they needed and could store.

“In previous years, we have advised producers to make as much hay as possible — but this year the conditions are different,” Mr Ford said.

“Hay will need to be stored for some time and growers need to prepare storage and cash-flow to facilitate that.

“General uncertainty in the market due to the global situation combined with low cattle numbers because of de-stocking due to drought and stronger pasture growth, mean we’re not advocating making as much hay as you’d like.

“Instead, Feed Central is suggesting producers carefully consider their shedding capacity and cash flow before rushing in to hay-making this season.”

During the webinar, Australian Fodder Industry Association executive officer John McKew will assist Feed Central in announcing the winners of Feed Central’s 2019-20 National Hay Quality Awards.

The webinar starts at 12.30 pm on Thursday, July 23.
