With the cancellation of this year's International Dairy Week, and other large regional shows last year due to COVID-19, cattle breeders have been enjoying a return to major events.
Tallygaroopna's Brad and Jess Gavenlock have recently returned from a successful showing at the Central Gippsland Jersey Breeders Annual Fair in Warragul, where the cow they own in partnership with Frank Walsh took out the Supreme Champion title.
Five-year-old Windy Ways Galaxies Dawn 7 has not been beaten wherever she has been shown, and holds three titles from International Dairy Week.
She will lead the team of three Jerseys and two Holsteins at the Sydney Royal, which the Gavenlocks will be supervising, including a number they share ownership in.
Her pedigree can be tracked back to about 1908, and as well as doing well in the show ring, can boast high Balanced Performance Index numbers.
Finley breeders Jane and Graham McPhee are sending four cattle to the Sydney show.
Son Callum will be taking up Hillview Park's own Holstein and Jersey, with a Guernsey and Illawarra from the farm but owned by other people also making the trip north.
The McPhees are regulars at Sydney and were disappointed when last year's event was cancelled.
“It's so much more than just the competition; there's a real camaraderie,” Mrs McPhee said.
“It's a real social event as well, and everyone helps out everyone else.”
Brookbora Jerseys from Tennyson will be taking one of their own and three head owned in partnership to the Sydney Royal. Daniel Bacon will be leading the team.
The Sydney Royal Easter Show started on Thursday and will run until April 12.
