State Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland launched the survey with a particular focus on the future use of the Mokoan Hub and Cafe site.
“The abrupt closure of the Mokoan Hub and Cafe has left many in the community shocked and disappointed,” she said.
“Staff lost their jobs without warning, volunteers were stood down indefinitely, the committee of management resigned, and environmental research and programs have been suspended.”
Ms Cleeland said locals had made it clear they were disheartened by the sudden nature of the closure and lack of transparency.
“This decision came without warning, without explanation, and without any respect for the people who have poured their time, energy and passion into this place.
“There’s a real sense of loss, but also a shared determination to ensure Winton Wetlands has a strong and vibrant future.”
The survey invites input from residents, volunteers, researchers and visitors on what they would like to see at the wetlands, including ideas for land use, tourism, conservation, education or potential private partnerships.
“All feedback will be collated and presented directly to the department and the minister,” Ms Cleeland said.
“This community has no shortage of ideas. Whether it’s through better land management, eco-tourism or a revitalised cafe and visitor hub, locals want to help shape the future, and they deserve to be heard.
“This site holds enormous cultural, environmental and tourism value.
“Decisions about its future must involve proper community consultation, not be made behind closed doors. The best results are always community-led.”
