Presented by producer-led project Stock Sense, the Thursday, June 6 workshop will include a number of speakers.
Well-known farm consultant and veterinarian John Webb Ware, from University of Melbourne’s Mackinnon Project, will speak on managing stock through winter and planning for the next dry.
‘‘It is important for all producers to consider the management of pastures and stock over winter,’’ Dr Webb Ware said.
‘‘Get it right and you’re set to take advantage of spring conditions; get it wrong and the consequences can be severe.
‘‘Secondly, producers should be reviewing their drought strategy while it’s fresh in their mind.
‘‘It is often the last thing people want to do, but a review of what worked and what didn’t is important to make sure you’re prepared if it occurs again. Ultimately, we want farms to survive dry periods, resulting in minimal negative impacts.’’
Stock Sense veterinarian Pat Kluver said most stock losses on-farm occurred in the transition into or out of drought.
‘‘It’s important to know the risks and make sure you have preventative strategies in place to minimise losses and at the same time have a contingency for any emergencies that may occur,’’ Dr Kluver said.
Presentations will include: Meat & Livestock Australia’s Johann Schroder, speaking about the options for pain relief in livestock husbandry practices; the Integrity Systems Company, providing information on the Livestock Production Assurance biosecurity requirements and how to get ready for an audit; and Dr Kluver, giving a region-specific disease update.
The workshop will include a light lunch and is free for all producers to attend.
