That's the view of Central Coast coach John Hutchinson after the 22-year-old's slick star turn in a 1-1 draw with 10-man Melbourne Victory.
Herrington had played just 17 league games and 21 matches in total across two injury-ravaged seasons.
But he is blossoming under new boss Hutchinson and thwarted Victory's attack multiple times with his cool head.
"If I look at a huge upside, it was Diesel Herrington," Hutchinson said.
"He's got back-to-back-to-back 90-minute games in for the start of the season.
"You talk about a player with no ceiling; I look at him and, for me, he's the number one centre-back in this league - comfortably.
"He's an incredible athlete, incredible footballer, great guy. I just hope his body issues are behind him. We're very lucky to have him in this country. We're very lucky to have him at our football club."
In less than a year, Lucas Herrington went from Brisbane Roar, to Colorado Rapids, to the Socceroos' World Cup squad and the Premier League with Hull City.
Asked whether his older brother could enjoy a similar trajectory, Hutchinson said: "I don't see a ceiling right now".
"His clearances, he's aggressive, he's great in the air, he's very good with the ball. He's 6'3", runs like the wind. I'm not sure what else we want from a centre back," Hutchinson said.
"His ceiling is ... I don't know where it's going to stop him."
Sunday's game was turned on its head when Victory right-back Harry Shillington was sent off after a VAR review in the 13th minute for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity by sliding in on a breaking Ali Auglah.
In the 63rd minute, Auglah let rip with a terrific long ball which bounced and sat up perfectly for speedy Mariners striker Oli Lavale to pounce and rifle home a wonderful half-volley.
But Lavale's joy was short lived as Victory equalised just six minutes later.
Charles Nduka worked the ball back to Jordi Valadon just outside the box and the midfielder produced a scintillating strike into the opposite top corner.
Mariners goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne brilliantly denied Franco Lino a late winner.
"Even towards the end, there was the feeling that we could have won the game with 10 men," Victory coach Giovanni Savarese said.
"So, very proud of the performance. Although I'm not happy because we want three points, we feel that we grew as a team today.
"Because we have never suffered as we suffered today, and I think that builds a strong culture within the club."
Winless Victory play Persib in the ACL2 at AAMI Park on Wednesday, then travel to face Adelaide on Sunday, while the also winless Mariners play Sydney FC on Friday.
