While some of these have an immediate effect, others will unfold throughout 2026 and beyond. Now we find ourselves with an immediate challenge for our industry regarding firearm laws in Australia, for which we are united in confronting.
As deer hunters, our focus isn’t normally on the tool of the trade; however, that doesn’t diminish its value, as without it, we would have a very different scenario doing what we love.
During what would typically be the Christmas break, the ADA has been flat out advocating on your behalf in a rapidly changing environment in Australia for firearm owners. We face many challenges, including the reality that emotion is currently the main political driver of government responses. However, given the foundations laid in Victoria in 2025, we are in a position to build on this to make sure that evidence and common sense have the best chance of prevailing. While outcomes can never be guaranteed, we know that the work we are doing helps create a pathway to the best possible outcome, and we are in this position because of your support as a member of the Australian Deer Association.
It is also important that we don’t get completely consumed by the challenges we face, and that we take the time to enjoy the opportunities in front of us with friends and family. Soon we will have a highlight of many hunters' year with the rut and roar just around the corner in March and April, quickly followed by the hog deer season in April. In addition, we will gain new access to 130,000 hectares of public land in the Snowy River and Errinundra National Parks, which the ADA successfully unlocked after years of dedicated work. I look forward to hearing about the new adventures hunters will now enjoy in these remote prime deer-hunting locations and seeing them shared in Australian Deer.
At the heart of all of this is what has always made our community strong: the willingness of everyday members to stand together, stay informed, and support one another. No matter what challenges arise, we can take confidence that we are not facing them alone. The ADA will continue to represent your interests with professionalism and persistence, ensuring that decision-makers understand the importance of hunting, not just as a tradition, but as a legitimate and valued part of outdoor recreation in Australia.
