GOTAFE student Chris Lindsay grew up on a farm and has always been around animals, so studying a Certificate IV in Agriculture (AHC40116) was a natural progression for him.
“I had the fundamentals of farming, but the thing that I’ve found most useful from the course is creating a paper trail and proper documentation,” he said.
“I got a lot out of the OH&S department. We already talk about safety, but now we have implemented a standard operating procedure and we do a proper induction for people.”
The Certificate IV in Agriculture is available as part of the Free TAFE Scheme for eligible students.
Horticulture
Andrew Taylor lives on a 44.5ha property that has a range of timber plantations, a fruit and nut orchard, and has been working in the horticulture industry for more than 20 years.
He is now passing on his knowledge and first-hand experience to GOTAFE Certificate IV in Horticulture (AHC40416) students.
“Horticulture is a diverse industry area including garden and landscape maintenance, landscape construction, the retail and wholesale nursery industry, the growth and production of food and other crops,” he said.
“We give our students a taste of all these streams with the course.”
Agricultural Mechanical Technology
Third-year apprentice, Jack, comes from a farming background and has a true passion for tractors and farm machinery.
He decided to enrol in the Certificate III in Agricultural Mechanical Technology (AUR30416) and is learning how to diagnose and repair engine issues, diesel fuel injection systems, and mobile plant systems, as well as testing and repairing basic electrical circuits.
“The course is a bit of a mix of agriculture, truck mechanics, earthmoving — basically anything that has a diesel engine in it,” he said.
“There’s a lot of on-the-job learning, but the course gives you the background knowledge and theory you need.”
