The weekly program, titled Hands On Learning, will see a kitchen garden of fruits and vegetables blossom under the eyes of the Years 5 and 6 students.
Year 6 student Georgie said she was enjoying being part of the program.
“I think when I’m older I would like to do a trade, today I’ve been paving and I really enjoy it,” she said.
“Every week we break up into groups and we do different activities for the day. And today we’re building garden beds, paving and repainting the firepit.
“I’m gaining more confidence when doing outdoor activities with family and friends, too.”
The program is not limited to gaining outdoors skills, but also teaches the students about developing healthy eating habits, while growing a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables from the school’s own kitchen garden.
Using donated materials, the students were instructed how to pave and paint the facility from scratch under the guidance of teachers and volunteers.
They then focused on all the preparatory work on the garden and the planting of the likes of lettuce, strawberries and tomatoes.
Fellow Year 6 student Jayden also spoke of the skills he is developing.
“Today I’ve been digging holes for fence posts, so we can place a fence around the firepit. I think the entire process will be finished in a couple of weeks,” Jayden said.
“I’ve been busy with digging holes for the firepit, and now I’m looking forward to lunch which is chicken tenders with cheese, tomato and lettuce.”
The hard work will pay off in the following weeks where the young crew members will be able to enjoy the fruits of their labour.
