Cliff, who is 72 years old, regularly fly fishes the north-east streams for trout.
However on this occasion, during the Victorian Government's Golden Tag competition, Cliff and his mate were casting Tassie Devil lures from the shore around dusk.
“We'd been fishing for half an hour when my green Tassie was engulfed,” Cliff said.
The duo noticed the golden tag a few metres out from the bank and Peter (Cliff's mate) tried to tail-grab the beast, to no avail.
“I didn’t miss though and the fish was landed safely seconds later.”
The $2000 helped Cliff buy a set of new tyres for his Toyota Hilux.
