The open day is being coordinated by the Deniliquin Aero Club, and will be held Sunday, June 23 from 9am to noon.
The official opening of the runway will take place in the days preceding the open day, for which Edward River Council has invited some special guests.
Deniliquin Aero Club president Jy Brown said the open day will be a chance to view static displays and, weather permitting, aerial displays.
“Several local pilots and planes will be on display, plus we intend to have joy flights and a formation flyover.
“The displays will include a P40 Kittyhawk display and Rural Fire Service bombers, among others.
“The event is being supported by Edward River Council, Wettenhall Air Services, Field Air, The Border Flying Club Tocumwal, the Deniliquin & District Vintage and Veteran Car Club and Deniliquin Model Aircraft Club, Riverina Flying School and our local emergency services who will be on site displaying their equipment.
“The Deni Aero Club will be selling bacon and egg rolls for breakfast, and tea and coffee will be available on site for purchase.
“Everyone is welcome to attend and enjoy the day.”
Construction of the new airport runway was completed in November last year.
Using $5.5 million in Federal Government funding, the original 1219m sealed runway (runway 06/24) was removed and replaced with a new construction with significantly increased bearing capacity for both the runway and taxiway.
For those coming in after dark – such as the frontline emergency services – a new aeronautical ground lighting system has been installed, along with a new lighting cubicle and infrastructure.
New LED luminaires for the existing illuminated wind direction indicator (IWDI) and apron floodlights will increase safety during take-off and landings at night and in low visibility.
