Launched in early 2025, the program already has 35 collection sites, spread across western Victoria, from Mildura and Swan Hill in the northwest of the state and down to Geelong, the gateway to the Western District.
These sites have provided producers with a coordinated system for collecting and recycling bags used for fertiliser, seed, grain, stock feed and pet food.
Phase 2 will extend the program across the entire state.
New sites have been planned for central and eastern Victoria, spanning from Walkerville through Nathalia to Corryong.
Western Victoria will also add more collection points, with locations stretching from Nelson and Kaniva to Elmhurst.
The northeast and northwest regions will also be included, covering towns from Nhill and Marnoo through Speed and Kinglake West to Wodonga.
A final round of sites will deliver statewide coverage, reaching Lalbert, Derrinallum, Fingal, Orbost, Benambra and Grantville.
The expanded network will give producers in all region’s local drop-off options, reducing the need to store, burn or bury plastic bags.
By creating a clear pathway for recycling, the program aims to reduce contamination risks for soil and waterways while turning plastic waste into new products.
Once Victoria is fully covered, bagMUSTER will move into neighbouring regions, beginning with phased launches in South Australia and Western Australia, with even broader national expansion expected to follow in future stages.
For the agriculture industry, the Victorian rollout represents a major step towards managing plastic waste more sustainably.
Producers will gain easier access to disposal options, while the sector moves closer to meeting broader environmental and circular economy goals.
