Margni Park owner Barry Ingram from Euroa entered two animals into the show and said he thought the event was a great idea to encourage the younger generation in the art of showing.
“I came to show the cattle, and they borrow the heifers for the junior handlers,” Mr Ingram said.
“I love it because I'm old, I want to see the young ones parade the animals and enjoy it.”
The first-time event attracted about 100 head of cattle at the Numurkah Showgrounds on Saturday, March 14.
Novice handlers proudly paraded their cattle and were judged on the length of leads, level of polish and overall presentation of their animals.
Stu Cameron from Inverleigh Simmental in Invergordon said the event had high quality cattle, as the entrants were set to go to the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
“A lot of these cattle have come here for an outing and would have gone to Sydney in two weeks,” Mr Cameron said.
The Sydney Royal Easter Show was due to run from Thursday, March 26 to Monday, April 6, but was cancelled due to a state of emergency banning events of more than 500 people, as a result of the coronavirus.
Entrants in the Goulburn Valley Autumn Beef Festival came from far and wide, with handlers arriving from NSW, Traralgon in south Gippsland and Hamilton in western Victoria, and many arrived the night before the show began.
“We had an open show, from baby heifers up to the seniors, and then a youth show where young people do the showing,” Mr Cameron said.
Mr Cameron's Valley Creek Primus won Junior Champion Bull, Grand Champion Bull, Supreme Exhibit and All Breeds Beef Exhibit.
“You need a good beef animal with plenty of meat on them and they've got to be able to walk well, and stand square-like.”
