During this period, Heathcote had 230 claims, while Benalla had 226 claims.
Bendigo had 181 claims.
In total, RACV customers lodged 7232 claims for kangaroo-related collisions in 2025. During this period, one in six kangaroo claims resulted in a write-off.
The average claim was for $9000.
Andrew Golland, owner and manager of Dosser Panel and Paint in Benalla, said it didn’t surprise him to see Benalla make the top 10 locations for kangaroo-related crashes.
On average, his team responds to two or three kangaroo-related collisions a week. Many of these are not write-offs but do require towing.
Often, the number of call-outs varies depending on the time of year, but recently, it has been fairly steady.
“In the last year or two it’s been more constant,” Mr Golland said.
Hot spots include Sydney Rd and the Midland Hwy, as well as the roads to Mansfield and Tatong.
RACV general manager insurance and roadside Bill Bloodworth said motorists should be alert to the risks.
“The risk is greatest at dawn and dusk, so motorists should slow down, stay alert and scan the roadside, particularly where kangaroos are most active,” he said.
The RACV recommends slowing down in areas with wildlife signage or where visibility is poor.
Drivers should also use high beams when it’s safe and there’s no oncoming traffic. This can help you spot animals sooner.
Scanning both sides of the roadside can also help you to detect movement.
