Hannah Steane, 8, from Echuca was diagnosed more than three years ago with rhabdomyosarcoma — a rare and aggressive soft tissue cancer that primarily affects children.
Since her diagnosis, Hannah has endured an intensive course of treatment at the Royal Children’s Hospital, including chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy.
In a recent update, Hannah's mum, Katika, revealed that scans had detected four new areas of cancer — on her collarbone, sternum, above her adrenal gland and on her lumbar spine.
Despite the ongoing fight, Katika said Hannah remained every bit her resilient, spirited self.
“(Hannah) is a girl of few words about how she’s feeling about this kind of thing ... she’s very quiet, but she’s resilient,” Katika said.
Katika said she was grateful for any support coming the family’s way through donations.
“Knowing that we’ll probably have more treatment coming up (the donations) will take the pressure off me having to continue to work, just to be there, and obviously being away from home and taking her to all appointments,” she said.
As Hannah begins treatment for these newly discovered areas of cancer, charity organisation Country Hope is calling on the community to rally behind the family.
Family liaison officer Kristy McMahon said that while Hannah faced many challenges ahead, the focus remained firmly on surrounding the Steane family with time, comfort and unwavering support.
“No family should ever have to face a child’s cancer journey alone. Right now, the most important thing we can do is help Hannah’s family focus on being together, making memories, and supporting each other through every moment,” Mrs McMahon said.
The appeal has already garnered support, with a total of 76 community members donating a collective $6540.
Local schools and organisations have gotten behind the fundraiser, with messages of support for the family coming from all parts of town.
Every donation made through the appeal goes directly to the Steane family, helping cover essential expenses including rent, household bills, travel and accommodation costs for hospital visits, counselling, domestic assistance and other practical support.
