Court Network talks support in court

In support of the 16 Days of Activism campaign, Court Network took to the Maude St Mall in Shepparton on Thursday, December 1, with an outreach table, a smile and a worthwhile cause.

The 16 Days of Activism is a global campaign that raises awareness of the prevalence, impact and drivers of gendered violence, and celebrates the achievements and progress in working towards a society free of gender inequity.

Court Network is a not-for-profit community organisation that works in the response and recovery sector of gender-based violence for all court users relating to gendered violence, including victims, witnesses, accused, family and friends.

Volunteers of Court Network, referred to as net-workers, provide free, confidential non-legal information, support and referral before, during and after court matters.

Court Network Hume program co-ordinator Cassandra Burgess said having experienced family violence herself, the awareness and advocacy for the cause was close to her heart.

“All of our net-workers do this out of the kindness of their heart and compassion for other people,” she said.

“We support all court users in a non-judgement and non-bias environment ... It ensures all court users feel represented, safe and supported; whether that be sitting with them, directing them where to register or referring them to a duty lawyer, it’s a well-rounded service.”

Locals should keep their eyes peeled for more campaign information and events around City of Greater Shepparton for the remainder of the 16 Days of Activism, ending on Sunday.
