While they knew it was an important moment, they couldn’t have imagined how significant it would be.
Today, volunteers in 20 countries on five continents tackle land degradation, soil erosion and biodiversity loss via local self-reliance and community-government partnerships through Landcare.
All that and more will be celebrated a stone’s throw away from the Winjallok Landcare Group launch event next month, with a special 40th birthday bash.
The Celebrating the Birthplace of Landcare event will be held on Saturday, November 14 from 10am to 1.30pm at Camp Seed, 7 Church St, Stuart Mill.
North Central Catchment Management Authority regional Landcare coordinator Belinda Pritchard said having the birthplace of such an important organisation in our catchment was a sense of pride for the local community and the region’s other Landcare groups.
“Our catchment is now home to more than 160 Landcare and natural resource management groups, run by more than 4000 volunteers,” she said.
“Those volunteers spend more than 65,000 hours each year delivering on-ground works on both private and public property controlling weeds, rabbits and erosion, as well as revegetating vast areas and fencing off waterways.
“We’re really looking forward to celebrating them and their achievements over a long lunch and with some amazing guest speakers.”
The lunch is free to attend, but registrations are essential.
