Under the scheme, rural ratepayers can gain access to subsidised indigenous plants, for a cost of just $1 per plant. This includes a cardboard guard and stakes for protection.
All ratepayers in Moira Shire who live in farm, rural living or rural conversation zones are eligible for the scheme. Those who are unsure what zone they live in can contact council on 5871 9222.
According to the council, the list of available plants includes bushes and trees, large and small, that are native to the region.
Council chair administrator Graeme Emonson said the scheme was intended to provide many benefits
“Whether it be for windbreaks, privacy, to increase wildlife habitat or simply to increase the number of trees or shrubs on your property, this scheme is here to help,” Dr Emonson said.
Plant numbers are capped at 50 plants per rate notice for properties under five hectares, and at 160 plants per rate notice for properties larger than five hectares. The scheme is capped at three rate notices per owner.
Residents must agree to plant and tend all the plants they purchase. They must prepare the land properly before planting, including weed control.
Indigenous plants can be ordered from July 1 every year, with orders for the current scheme now open.
Once orders have been approved, Australian Native Farm Forestry Discount Plants in Cobram will propagate the plants, which will be available to collect from May to June 2027. Plants should be planted between May and August.
