Murray crays on the move

One of the Murray crays bothered by poor-quality water.

Last week, this Murray cray and around 120 of its mates were seen clambering out of the lower Goulburn River to escape the poor-quality water (between Bunbartha and Yambuna).

In response, staff from the Victorian Fisheries Authority’s Arcadia hatchery, Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority staff and local fishing club members captured the Murray crays over two days and released them back into the Goulburn River between Murchison and Toolamba, where the quality water was good.

Without help, the Murray crays may have died due to stress or predation.
