The north-east region of Victoria, which includes the Goulburn Valley, experienced a particularly high number of recruits, with 494 new volunteers over the age of 18 joining.
The recruitment boom follows the CFA’s annual Give Us A Hand recruitment campaign.
This provided local brigades with the opportunity to put a call out to local residents or to re-engage with those who had been considering joining in the past.
Statewide, almost 1000 of the new volunteers are aged between 18 and 34. Meanwhile, 483 are women while 1222 will become operational firefighters.
Importantly, the CFA is not just about firefighting, with a range of other volunteer roles are available.
Statewide since January, 300 people have volunteered to assist brigades in highly valued support roles.
According to the CFA, the number of people who have put themselves forward to assist their communities is highly encouraging.
It believes this will further enhance its ability to respond to emergencies in the upcoming fire season.
