Opposition promises train boost

The Victorian Opposition has promised to increase the number of seats on the Echuca line if it wins November’s state election.

The Coalition will introduce new hybrid electric trains to the Melton and Wyndham Vale lines at a cost of $1.7 billion, freeing up 25 three-car set V/Line trains to be used elsewhere on the network.

Five of those sets will be allocated to the Echuca and Bendigo lines, providing 1100 additional seats across the two lines.

Opposition leader Jess Wilson said the redistribution was about ensuring all Victorians could benefit from the coalition’s public transport plans.

“Our plan will deliver more capacity across regional Victoria, making it easier for people to get to work, access education and healthcare, and stay connected with family and friends,” Ms Wilson said.

“Whether you live in Melbourne or regional Victoria, you deserve a public transport system that keeps pace with your community and gets you where you need to go.”

The Victorian election will be held on Saturday, November 28.
