“We thought no-one’s going to want to stay with us,” Jamie said.
How wrong he was.
The Old Creamery has now been recognised among several local businesses at the Moira Shire Business Excellence Awards, taking out Excellence In Horticulture.
First established eight years ago, the business operates on the site of a former dairy enterprise.
It has rapidly expanded and now produces 550 varieties of dahlia which they export across the country.
They offer flowers for events, memorials and weddings.
Jamie said the award was not just recognition for them, but small businesses in general.
“Anyone who runs a small business deserves an award,” he said.
“It goes beyond what people see.”
He noted on average the pair puts in 120 hours of work each week.
He encouraged people to support businesses like theirs that source their products locally.
“There’s so much potential on our doorstep,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kotupna’s RVORE Biomass Solutions took out the Excellence in Manufacturing, Industrial and Logistical Services award.
The business which carts, removes and processes contaminated biomass and organics is operated by Wes Spencer and his brother Jeremy.
They offer products including mulch and composted topsoil to the general public.
Wes said he felt proud people appreciated their work enough to nominate them for the award.
“It does make you feel good that people appreciate what you do,” he said.
He believes their willingness to do things differently and offer start-to-finish services is what sets them apart from their competitors.
He said winning the award wouldn’t have been possible without the support of his eight staff members.
“Without the team behind us, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” he said.
