Meat & Livestock Australia and Australian Wool Innovation undertake three surveys each season.
They are used to help industry determine wool and lamb production forecasts and to understand the breed composition of the Australian flock on a national, state and regional basis.
The results of these surveys form the basis of MLA's Industry Projections, are used by processors for budgeting purposes, and allows import markets to ascertain short-term supply estimates.
The current reporting period began with a survey in October last year, which answers providing an estimate of the total flock size, a profile of the breeding ewes flock and measures of producer intentions for lambs and breeding ewes.
The yearly February survey is designed to provide a quick update on actual lamb sales to date and forecasts for future sales.
The May survey is similar to that from October.
The research has three primary objectives:
• Measure and report on flock population, demographics, sheep meat and wool supply information and producer production intentions.
• Ensure estimates are reliable and based on sufficiently large sample sizes to ensure the robustness and accuracy of estimates.
• Provide capacity to explore and investigate results at a smaller area and segment level.
