State MPs demand Barmah brumby safety

The Legislative Council of the Victorian Parliament has passed a motion calling for an end to aerial and ground shooting of brumbies in the Barmah and Alpine national parks.

The motion puts extra emphasis on ending shooting operations which leave carcases to decompose on public land.

The motion, which was put through the upper house, was supported by both Coalition MPs and crossbench MPs such as Andy Meddick (Animal Justice Party).

A motion is simply a way for the Legislative Council to formally express its view, state its position or call for action on a certain issue.

State Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell said the motion clearly indicated to Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio that the community had had enough.

“This motion is a win for the northern communities who have fought for better — and today achieved it,” Ms Lovell said.

The motion notes Ms D’Ambrosio should be required to: publicly announce the current brumby populations in the Barmah and Alpine national parks, reverse the current suspension on trapping and rehoming operations and cancel any current or planned brumby-shooting operations.

The motion was passed on August 19.
